January 2023
Gender at Work and its partners Ladysmith and Women at the Table, and Artificial Intelligence for Development Africa (AI4D Africa) are accepting applications from junior consultants or recent graduates from Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, Senegal, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria, for a two-year training program, to focus on skills and knowledge for working with organizations to improve gender equality and inclusion outcomes. Applicants must be recent graduates or junior consultants with a background in gender studies,be in artificial intelligence, development, gender and inclusion topics, have experience as a facilitator, and reside in one of the countries where AI4D Africa projects are located. Benefits include a budget of up to Canadian Dollar (CAD) 2,500 per year. (Deadline: 9 January)
The International Plant Biotechnology Outreach (IPBO)is accepting applications from post-doctoral and mid-career women researchers conducting agricultural research in African inter(national) research centers for their Open Doors 2023 Fellowship Programme. Applicants must be postdoc women research scholars (minimum 1-year after defending their PhD), or mid-career positions with no age limits, be a national or resident citizen in one of the VLIR-UOS scholarship countries (Benin, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Dr Congo, South Africa, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda), or an employee of target organization in one of these countries. They must have active employment in one of the higher education institutions, and the research fields must be in plant breeding, agrobiotechnology, molecular biology and genetics, microbiology, chemical ecology, plant & soil health, livestock, or aquaculture. Benefits include a complete financial sponsorship including a bench fee of up to EURO 500 per month for laboratory, support to arrange for travel, logistics and accommodation in Belgium, and networking. Call for Applications The Jacobs Foundation Research Fellowship Program 2023
The Jacobs Foundation Fellowship Program is accepting applications from early and mid-career researchers who work in improving the learning and development of children and youth worldwide for their 2023 Fellowship Program. Applicants must have obtained their PhD or equivalent degree within the last 10 years, be employed at an institution of higher education or research institute and be conducting quality research in an area of interest to the Jacobs Foundation. They must also be committed to engaging with Jacobs Foundation and the Fellowship network and contributing to the Foundations activities. Benefits include funding of up to Swiss Franc (CHF) 150, 000 awarded to fellow’s institutions to be used over a period of 3 years to cover fellow’s salary, equipment, technical assistance, professional travel, and trainee support. The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology(KAUST) is accepting applications from emerging research leaders and scientists to explore and address global challenges and opportunities for the benefit of humanity in their 2023 Fellowship Program. Applicants must be within four years of earning a PhD, expected to finish their PhD before the start of the fellowship, be ready to move to King Abdullah University of Science and Technology(KAUST), and have a King Abdullah University of Science and Technology(KAUST) faculty member agreeing to host them., They should also focus on one or more of the following research pillars: water, energy, the environment, food and health, and the digital domain. The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is accepting applications from scholars for proposals in the field of communicable diseases for the Joint Canada-Israel Health Research Program Phase II – 2022–2023 competition. Potential topics may include but not limited to Discovery research to identify new pathogens and their distribution in human populations, New therapeutic approaches for communicable diseases, Drug resistance biology and mechanism in infectious disease, Host-parasite interactions, New directions in vaccine research for infectious diseases, New technology platforms for rapid detection of pathogens of pandemic importance. Exclusions: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 research, studies, surveys, clinical trials and work primarily aimed at informing public health policy are NOT eligible for funding through this opportunity. Applicants must present proposals co-led by three independent investigators, one from Canada, one from Israel and one from a low or middle-income country (LMIC). Benefits include a maximum amount of up to CAD 500,000 per grant for the principal investigator in Canada, up to CAD 500,000 for the principal investigator in Low or middle income country (LMIC) and up to CAD 460, 829 for the principal investigator in Israel. The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis(IIASA) is accepting applications worldwide for the 2023 Science Communication Fellowship Programme. Applicants must have a bachelor’s or equivalent degree in science or journalism and/or be current student or graduate of a science journalism program. The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis(IIASA) gives priority to citizens or residents of countries in which IIASA has a member organization. Benefits include a monthly salary based on an annual gross salary of up to EURO 18, 800(exempt from income tax in Austria and subject to deductions for health insurance and/or social security), and the cost of travel to and from the institute will be covered by International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis ( IIASA). The WITS Institute for Social and Economic Research in collaboration with The African Trust Infrastructures is accepting applications for a 3-year doctoral fellowship from people all over the world working on any appropriate discipline. Applicants are expected to research the origins and institutional effects of digital population registration and finance systems currently under development in the continent. Applicants are also expected to work closely with research staff and participate fully in the intellectual life of the institute and should not be compatible with other employment. Benefits include funding for the three years fellowship duration, and the package for the first year will be up to South African Rand (ZAR) 180, 000 to cover university fees, research expenses, and living allowances, as well as assistance with conference funding which may also be available. The European University Institute (EUI) is accepting applications for the Policy Leadership Fellowship (PLF) from early and mid-career policy professionals in the fields of politics, civil service, media, non-governmental organisations, and other related fields for a duration of five or ten months (five months: September 2023 - January 2024 / February 2024 - June 2024, ten months: September 2023 - June 2024) resident fellowship programme. Applicants must be able to autonomously accomplish tasks in the fellowship work plan, be willing to engage in peer discussions on topics beyond their areas of expertise and mid-career professionals, must be able to demonstrate solid professional experience minimum of 10 years in a given policy area. Benefits include a basic grant of up to EURO 2,500 per month, and if applicable, a family allowance of up to EURO 300 per month to fellows with a partner, EURO 200 per month for each dependent child, and travel expenses to Florence from the place of origin up-to EURO 1, 200. The 2023 Nexus Conference is accepting applications from everyone in the world for an in-person and virtual 10th anniversary, 100 Years Starship celebrations, in Nairobi, Kenya. The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is accepting applications for research awards related to the following development areas or themes; Climate-Resilient Food Systems, Democratic and Inclusive Governance, Education and Science, Ethics in Development Research, Global Health, Policy and Evaluation, and Sustainable Inclusive Economies. For awards based in Ottawa, applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, or students from low or middle-income countries enrolled in a Canadian University with a work permit. Applicants for the Global Health award must hold Kenyan citizenship, the proposed research must focus on one or more developing countries in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and research cannot be proposed in countries with Government of Canada travel security advisories to “Avoid all travel”. Benefits include full-time non-union employment in the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) for awardees in Ottawa, and term employment for the Global Health awardees. The University of Oxford Reuters Institute is accepting applications from 30 mid-career journalists from all over the world for the 2023/2024 fully funded Journalism Fellowship Programme. Applicants must have a minimum of 5 years of journalistic experience or in rare cases demonstrate an equivalent level of expertise. The Fellowship programme will last for a duration of 3-6 months depending on funding to begin either in October, January, or April. Applicants are expected to refrain from professional work during the fellowship period. Benefits include a fully funded programme, a monthly stipend of up to EURO 2, 000 to cover accommodation, food, and general living expenses including the cost of travel to and from the United Kingdom and visa costs. Call for Applications The Commonwealth Foundation Civil Society Advisory Governors
The Commonwealth Foundation is accepting applications from 5 Civil Society Advisory Governors, each representing a region of the Commonwealth(Africa, Asia, Caribbean, Americas, Pacific, and Europe) to join representatives from all member states on the board of governors to serve for 2 years from July 2023 to June 2025. Applicants must have a strong background engaging with civil society in their region that focus on areas that align with the Foundation’s field of work and have connections that will enable confident representation of your regional civil society and its interests. They should also have an understanding of the Commonwealth's unique intergovernmental position of advancing the needs and interests of civil society and must appreciate the importance of working constructively and in a participatory fashion with governments. The Training Centre in Communication (TCC)in collaboration with The Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience (CABI) is accepting applications from 10 early career journal editors for an associate training and mentoring workshop programme that aims to give new editors the skills and knowledge they need for upcoming editorial board positions. Applicants must be based in a Research4Life Group A or B country or Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience (CABI) member country, not have more than 5-years post-PhD or equivalent professional qualifications (excluding career breaks or child care), and be actively publishing peer-review articles in subject areas within the scope of Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience (CABI). The Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies Iso Lomso Fellowship is accepting applications from African scholars for a three-year attachment to Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) to conduct a long-term research programme. Applicants must be from any African country, have an affiliation at a research or higher education institution in an African country and hold an academic position. They must also have obtained a doctoral degree within the preceding 7 years. Benefits include an economy return flight, accommodation, equipped individual office space, a monthly stipend for daily living costs, participation in regular Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS), and a child care subsidy for fellows accompanied by young children while in residence. The International Business Machines Corporation(IBM) is accepting applications from PhD students worldwide and who are focused on areas of interest in technology. Applicants must be nominated by a doctoral faculty member during the nomination period of December 15, 2022 – February 17, 2023, be enrolled full-time in a PhD program over the academic year of the award and must have two years remaining in their program at the time of nomination and stay in the same program for the duration of the award. Benefits include up to USD 40, 000 award for universities in the United States of America, and a range between up to USD 6, 000 - USD 25, 000 award for other countries. (Deadline: 17 February)
The Turkiye Scholarship is accepting applications from students all over the world for a fully funded scholarship program at each education level, ie. undergraduate, master’s, PhD, and research programmes. Applicants at the undergraduate level must have a minimum of 70% academic achievement and under the age of 21, while applicants in the masters level must have a minimum academic achievement of 75% and under the age of 30. Applicants applying in the Health Science program(Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy) must have a minimum of 90% academic achievement, must be under the age of 35 for a PhD program, and be under the age of 45 for a research scholarship. Benefits include tuition cover fees, accommodation, flight tickets to and from the country of origin and a once-off flight ticket, health insurance, and a monthly stipend of up to Turkish Lira 1000 at undergraduate level, Turkish Lira 1400 at masters and Turkish Lira 1800 at PhD level. The Danish Foreign Ministry of Affairs(MFA) is accepting applications from Danish research institutions in partnership with research institutions in low-income Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) partner countries to build research capacity in developing countries under development in conditions of Climate Change. Applicants must be universities or research-based institutions registered in Denmark with the capacity to (co-)supervise PhD students., Applications must be submitted by researchers who will be the project coordinator on behalf of the responsible institution. The Association of African Universities is accepting submissions of papers under the theme, “Advancing Excellence in African Higher Education” for the 2023 Conference of Rectors, Vice-Chancellors and Presidents of African universities (COREVIP 2023) in Windhoek, Namibia. The Conference will focus on excellence and successful initiatives, interventions and outcomes in African Higher education within the sub-themes in; Future of African higher education post C0VID-19, Contributions of African Higher Education Institutions to Addressing the Challenges linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, Contributions of African Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals and Funding of African Higher Education Institutions in the face of unpredictable Economy. The Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) is accepting applications for undergraduate, graduate, and PhD scholarship programs in cooperation with renowned universities in Taiwan. Applicants must be a citizen of the country listed to be eligible for the TaiwanICDF scholarships, must satisfy the admission requirements for the partner university to which the applicants have applied to study under the TaiwanICDF scholarship, and not hold any other Republic of China (ROC) (Taiwan) government-sponsored scholarship in the same academic year. They should also have never had any scholarship revoked by any Republic of China (ROC)(Taiwan) government agency or expelled from any Taiwanese university. The West African Research Center(WARC) is accepting applications for intra-african cooperation and exchange among researchers and institutions Travel Grant Fellowship Program from African scholars and graduate students. Applicants must be from West African countries and priority is given to those affiliated with West African colleges, universities or research institutions. Benefits include travel costs of up to USD 1,500 and a stipend of USD 1,500. The travel grants may be used to attend and present papers at academic conferences held on the continent of Africa, visit libraries or archives located in Africa, engage in collaborative work with colleagues at another African institution, and travel to a research site. The African Palliative Care Association(APCA) in partnership with Global Partners in Care(GPIC) is accepting applications from African- based healthcare and social care professionals who are involved in palliative care provision at all levels of study, for the 2023 Scholarships Programme. Applicants must be qualified nurses, social workers, clinical officers, physiotherapists, and music therapists with a degree or diploma residing and working in Africa. They must have obtained admission to a palliative care course in an institution in Africa, recognized by African Palliative Care Association(APCA), be licensed and registered with a professional body, be able to serve their institution of work for at least 1-year after completion of training and be willing to provide updates and testimonials in support of future fundraising for the scholarship fund. The Loreal- UNESCO Sub-Saharan is accepting applications from young African talented researchers in the formal sciences, life and environmental science, material science, engineering science, and technological science for their Africa Young Talents Programme. Applicants in the doctoral studies must be nationals of one of the 49 countries in Sub- Saharan Africa(including South Africa), be enrolled in a doctoral school, and carry out their doctoral research in a laboratory in one of the 48 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Applicants in the post-doctoral studies must be nationals of one of the 49 countries in Sub- Saharan Africa(including South Africa), be enrolled in a post-doctorate in research in a laboratory in one of the 48 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and have defended their thesis after February 2018. The International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology(ICGEB) is accepting applications for a three-year postgraduate study fellowship programme from PhD scholars, to obtain a PhD degree in life sciences. Applicants must be nationals of an International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology(ICGEB) member state. Applicants applying to academic institutions in Trieste, Italy should hold a BSc degree and an MSc degree, as well as those in New Delhi, India, and Cape Town, South Africa. Applicants applying to Trieste must be below 32 years of age and have no age limit for New Delhi and Cape Town. Call for Applications The Nordic Africa Institute’s African Guest Researchers’ Scholarships 2024
The Nordic Africa Institute is accepting applications from early career researchers to pursue their own research projects in the field of Social Science and Humanities through the African Guest Researchers’ Scholarship programme 2024. Applicants must be based in Africa, engaged in African-oriented research, and the research topic should be within the discipline of Social Sciences and Humanities with a focus on contemporary Africa. They must be full-time staff employed in an African-based university or research institution, enrolled in a doctoral programme in the African region, or a postdoctoral researcher within 5 years or less of PhD completion. Benefits include return airfare, accommodation, an allowance of up to 400 Swedish Krona per day, plus an installation grant of up to 2,500 Swedish Krona, access to a workspace, and Nordic Africa Institute’s library. The African Research fellowship program is accepting applications from four African researchers for a 1-year African Research Fellowship Program to work at the ESA-ESRIN premises in Frascati (Rome, Italy) in collaboration with European Space Agency(ESA) scientists. Applicants must have proposals responding to challenges the African continent is facing with respect to water resource management and food security, focussing on small holder needs, coastal processes and fisheries. Benefits include training opportunities and scientific tools, African Framework for Research, Innovation Communities and Applications(EO AFRICA) Space Academy and its Digital Campus will provide access to expertise and knowledge and the research fellows can directly collaborate with the European scientists and implement research ideas in the Innovation lab. The United Nations University - World Institute for Development Economics Research( UNU-WIDER) is accepting applications from registered doctoral students, for their 2023/2024 visiting Fellowship Programme, to utilize the resources and facilities at UNU-WIDER for their PhD dissertation or thesis research on developing economies and collaborate with other researchers in areas of mutual interest. Applicants must be enrolled in a PhD programme and shown ability to conduct research in developing economies. They should be fluent in oral and written English, possess good quantitative or qualitative analytical skills and researchers must be in the later stages of their PhD studies. Benefits include a travel grant to cover travel costs to and from the location of your PhD granting institution, medical insurance, and a monthly stipend of up to EURO 1,850 to cover living expenses in Helsinki. Call for Applications The Megatrends Afrika Fellowship Programme 2023 for African Researchers
The Megatrends Afrika Project is accepting applications for a 3-month fellowship Programme from African Researchers to work within the framework of its three core research themes; 1) Actors of violence and the changing nature of conflict, 2) Effects of megatrends on democratisation and autocratisation, and 3) Global power shifts and multipolarity. Applicants must be African researchers who are originally from an African country, have a PhD in politics, economics, social science, geography, international relations, and relevant religious studies, and must have academic publications and a track record in research areas of relevance to the Megatrends Afrika Project. Benefits include a monthly grant of up to EURO 2,800, a return trip between the place of residence and Germany, and an honorarium. (Deadline: 7 April)
The Enel Foundation and the Sustainable Energy for All(SEforALL) are accepting 150 applications from early-career energy professionals who are citizens of African Countries, with at least 50% women aimed at empowering women and youth to lead the clean energy transition in Africa. Applicants must be between the age of 24 to 35 years by 1st May 2023 and must be a citizen of an African country, currently residing in an African country or relocating to Africa by the end of 2024. They must also be eligible to travel to Italy, have graduated by 1st May 2023 with a PhD, MSc, LLM, MPP, or MBA degree, and must have competencies and demonstrated interest to pursue a career -in the private or public sector - in the electricity space. The Hewlett-Packard (HP) Cambridge Partnership for Education is accepting applications for a 7-month Edtech Fellowship Programme to accelerate effective digital transformation in Education systems from emerging policy leaders. Applicants must be senior government officials, private sector or NGO leaders who are working with governments in Sub-Saharan African countries, and be responsible for digital transformation in K12 public schools on a regional or national scale. They must be experienced or working in a senior role for at least 3 years and must be involved in education, ICT, teaching and learning, infrastructure, innovation, finance or another department focused on using technology to improve learning. Benefits include full and 80 % scholarships for the programme fee of up to EURO 26, 000 including flights, accommodation, and meals at Cambridge. (Deadline: 16 April)
The Dag Hammarskjold Fund for journalists is accepting applications from mid-career print, television, radio, or internet journalists mainly from developing countries of Africa, Asia(including the Pacific Islands), and Latin America/the Caribbean to cover deliberations of the United Nations General Assembly for a 10-12 weeks Fellowship Programme, beginning in September. Applicants must be between 25-35 years of age, must have a current passport, and obtain an I-1 journalist visa from a U.S. embassy or consulate. They must also be employed by bona fide media organizations and provide work samples no earlier than 2022. Benefits include full funding to New York for the 78th United Nations General Assembly. The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OSWD) is accepting applications from early-career women scientists for a 3-year fellowship programme, to lead research projects in countries identified to be lacking scientific and technological resources. Applicants must have completed their PhD programmes in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics(STEM) subjects and be employed at academic or scientific research institutes in one of the listed Science and Technology lagging countries , and can be citizens of any country provided they have at least 5 years residence in of the listed Science and technology lagging countries. They must not have an active research grant or fellowship with the World Academy of Science(TWAS) or submitted an application for the TWAS programme within the same given year and will not be eligible to visit another institution in that year under the TWAS Visiting Professor programme. Benefits include an award of up to USD 50, 000 to cater to research-related costs, linking with industry and partners, outreach, communication, and networking. (Deadline:27 April)
Call for Proposals The Alternative Report on Africa
The Alternative Report on Africa is accepting contributions from researchers, thinkers, research institutions, think tanks, actors, and development professionals to contribute in a decisive way, to the consolidation of the transformations at work in African societies and institutions towards autonomy and sovereignty. The contributions must not exceed 12 single-spaced pages in font size 12 Times New Roman, and the contribution proposal must specify: the format of the proposed contribution(theoretical modeling, case study, critical reflection, sharing of experiences, participation in a round table, monograph, biography), and the subject dealt with and the contribution in empirical or scientific knowledge. For scientifically-oriented contributions, including methodology and bibliography, may include diagrams, figures, or maps. The contributions must promote emancipatory innovations, strategies, and policies of resilience or resistance to neoliberal logic and reflect African specificities. (Deadline: 30 April)
The United Nations Rights Commission Fellowship is accepting applications from people of African descent for intensive human rights training. The applicant must have a minimum of 4 years of work experience related to the rights of people of African descent, they must have submitted a letter from an organization working on issues related to people of African descent or minority rights certifying their status, and be available to attend the full duration of the programme. Benefits include a return ticket from the country of residence to Geneva, basic health insurance, and a stipend to cover accommodation and other living expenses for the duration of the programme. They must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in Turkey or any developed country, must be employed in a developing country and hold a research assignment there, must hold a PhD degree in natural and applied sciences, and be a maximum of 45 years by 31 December of the application year. They must not take up any assignments during the period of the fellowship, not have received or been awarded a fellowship under the programme, and must return to their country of origin after completion of the fellowship.
