  • Request for Proposals Renewable Energy Performance Platform (REPP). The Renewable Energy Performance Platform (REPP) today issued a gender-themed request for proposals (RFP) targeting women-led renewable energy projects in Africa. By focusing on women in particular, UK-government funded REPP is aiming to channel sources of funding to help create equal opportunities for women in the continent’s rapidly expanding renewable energy sector. Successful applicants stand to benefit from a host of financing services and support tailored to their unique circumstances and needs, ranging from technical assistance and capacity building to development loans, gap financing and access to risk mitigation instruments.   • Call for Concept Proposals STAARS Fellowship Program. The Structural Transformation of African Agriculture and Rural Spaces (STAARS) fellowship program, a multi-institution collaboration managed by Cornell University with support from the CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets (PIM), announces a call for concept proposals from early-career African researchers seeking to become STAARS fellows in 2020 to advance in-depth, rigorous, policy-oriented research on the causal determinants of productivity and income growth, asset accumulation, rural employment and risk management in African agriculture and rural spaces. The fellowship will cover travel and training expenses. (Deadline: 24 January)

  • Call for Nominations Royal Society Africa Prize. The Royal Society Africa Prize is to recognise outstanding research scientists based in Africa who are making an innovative contribution to the sciences which contributes significantly to capacity building in Africa. The winner will receive a bronze medal, accompanied by a £15,000 grant towards their research project and a gift of £2,000. (Deadline: 27 January)

  • Call for Applications AquayaLEARN Fellowship Program For Kenyan Students. Are you an MSc or PhD student enrolled in a Kenyan University and specializing in data visualization or the analysis of large data sets? Do you have a passion for applying science and technology to solve fundamental development challenges? Are you looking for an opportunity to collaborate with leading researchers dedicated to safe drinking water and better sanitation in Africa? If you answered yes to all of the above, apply now for a three month research fellowship with the Aquaya Institute that will begin in spring 2020. Aquaya is a non-profit research organization dedicated to safe, equitable, and sustainable water and sanitation in developing countries. Their mission is to improve public health by reducing the burden of waterborne diseases. (Deadline: 31 January)

  • Call for Applications Food System Vision Prize. The Food System Vision Prize is an invitation for organizations across the globe to develop a vision of the regenerative and nourishing food system that they aspire to create by the year 2050. Food System Vision Prize participants (a.k.a. Visionaries) will be tasked with developing concrete and actionable Visions for their chosen places—towns, state/provinces, regions, bioregions, watersheds, or countries—through a systems approach. A Grand Prize of $200,000 USD each will be awarded to up to 10 Top Visionary Teams. Finalists will also receive entry into an Accelerator, and gain access to advisors and resources from The Rockefeller Foundation. (Deadline: 31 January)

  • Call for Applications The Cordes Fellowship. If you are an exceptional social entrepreneur or nonprofit leader engaged in building sustainable solutions to poverty and injustice globally, the Cordes Fellowship provides an opportunity to participate as a full Delegate at the Opportunity Collaboration in Cancun, Mexico in October. The purpose of the Cordes Fellowship is to open doors, minds and networks for emerging social entrepreneurs and nonprofit executives; enrich OC with new, emerging leaders; and infuse OC discussions with a diversity of perspectives. Financial need is a primary consideration. Applicants from both for-profit and nonprofit organizations with adequate resources are less likely to be considered. (Deadline: 31 January)

  • Call for Applications The ONE Africa Award. The ONE Africa Award celebrates African efforts aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the world’s blueprint for a better future. The 2019 ONE Africa Award will recognise Africa-driven and Africa-led advocacy efforts that have demonstrated success at the community, national or regional level. The award recognises, rewards and advances the exceptional work of organisations founded by Africans and based in Africa, dedicated to advancing development goals in Africa. The US$100,000 award will recognise innovative African initiatives to fight extreme poverty and incentivise more of such efforts. (Deadline: 31 January)

  • Call for Applications 2020 FIG Foundation PhD Scholarships. The FIG Foundation will be providing scholarships of up to 4,000 euros plus possible funding for conference travel to PhD students. Applicants shall: (1) be studying for a PhD degree and registered solely in a surveying/geomatics academic programme that teaches surveying in a country listed by the World Bank as a low-income, lower-middle or upper-middle income economy, (2) have had a paper accepted by a peer reviewed international journal based on their doctoral research project, and (3) should not have submitted their final thesis at the application deadline. (Deadline: 1 February)

  • Call for Applications The Canadian Institute For Advanced Research (CIFAR) Azrieli Global Scholars Program. The CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholars program supports exceptional early-career researchers with funding, mentorship, a global network, and professional skills development. It provides unrestricted research support of $100,000 CAD, leadership training, mentorship, and opportunities for highly-promising early-career researchers in the first five years of a full-time research position to collaborate with colleagues from diverse disciplines. (Deadline: 5 February)

  • Call for Applications Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) Training Program. The MEST Training Program is a 12-month, full time, fully sponsored program in which the cohort – known as Entrepreneurs-in-Training (EITs) – complete a graduate-level course in software development, business and communications, with a focus on practical implementation. The MEST program provides rigorous entrepreneurial training and extensive hands-on project work, designed to ensure EITs master industry-proven methodologies for developing startups. This coursework is supplemented by a series of guest lectures, bringing in the experiences and insights of internationally-recognized executives and successful entrepreneurs. (Deadline: 7 February)

  • Call for Nominations 2020 Paula Kantor Award. The International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) is now accepting nominations for researchers from the Global South for the 2020 Paula Kantor Award for Excellence in Field Research, which honors the legacy of a visionary leader whose contributions to the feminist and social justice movements are evident across the world. In the spirit of Paula’s legacy of supporting applied research to advance the economic and social well-being of women in low-income and otherwise marginalized communities worldwide, this annual award is given to a young professional female researcher from the Global South doing field research related to ICRW’s mission, along with a US$2,500 cash prize. (Deadline: 9 February)

  • Call for Applications Yale Young African Scholars Program 2020. Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is an intensive academic and enrichment program designed for African secondary school students planning to pursue tertiary education and who wish to make meaningful impact as young leaders on the continent. Participants will enhance their academic skills, receive university admission and financial aid application guidance, and join a network of young leaders from across Africa. Following the eight-day program, students will be paired with mentors who will help advise them throughout the university application process. There are no tuition, meal, or lodging costs for students to participate in YYAS. (Deadline: 12 February)

  • Call for Applications The OpEd Project Public Voices Fellowship. The Public Voices Fellowship on the Climate Crisis is a collaboration among The OpEd Project, Ann MacDougall and the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication. It is a year-long program that includes four in-person, day-long workshops and one-on-one coaching by leading journalists and editors. All participants will publish at least two written pieces of thought leadership (and hopefully many more) during their fellowship that will greatly accelerate their impact as thought leaders helping to shape history.   • Call for Funding The British Academy Global Professorships 2020. This programme provides mid-career to senior scholars in any discipline within the humanities and social sciences, who are currently employed outside the United Kingdom, with the opportunity to be based for four years in the UK and make a contribution to UK research and higher education. Each appointment is intended to be a complete project in itself and is expected to involve a specific research focus. (Deadline: 19 February)

  • Call for Applications IBRO-ARC Bursaries 2020. The International Brain Research Organization African Regional Committee (IBRO-ARC) offers awards of up to €4000 each to young African researchers who have graduated with a Ph.D. or equivalent degree (in fundamental or clinical research) and who have demonstrated their ability to carry out independent research. Potential candidates should look for a host institution (within Africa or abroad) and provide a research proposal and detailed information on how the funds will be spent. Strong justification must be provided ensuring the applicant will return home after the exchange, in addition to an explanation of how the newly gained knowledge and skills will be used to advance neuroscience research in their home country. (Deadline: 20 February)

  • Call for Applications Eisenhower Women’s Leadership Program 2020. The Eisenhower Fellowships’ Women's Leadership Program seeks talented women leaders with a proven track record of achievement to join its influential global network of over 1,600 active Fellows. They seek diverse, dynamic doers with the vision to make the world a better place as well as the ability to create and implement a concrete plan to make that vision a reality post-fellowship. Fellows represent all professional sectors – private, public and nonprofit – and hail from any number of careers, from journalism to the military to higher education to private corporations to the theater and beyond. What all Fellows share, regardless of their professional background or nationality, is a desire to make meaningful positive change in the world in collaboration with peers across sectors and borders.   • Call for Applications CIFOR-ICRAF Female Postdoctoral Research Fellowships. Run by the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF), the Female Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Programme is offering four Post-doc positions to female scientists in various fields of research study to be hired in the 1st quarter of this year (2020) for a duration of initial one year. Scope of the Programme Female postgraduates are expected to hold a Doctoral degree in a field related to agriculture, agroforestry, forestry and fields related to sustainable land management. (Deadline: 28 February)

  • Call for Application 2020 MILEAD Fellows Program. A leadership development program to identify, develop and promote a new generation of young African female leaders to attain and thrive in critical leadership across Africa. Applications are invited from young African women between 19 – 25 years of age, living in Africa and in the Diaspora. The MILEAD Fellowship will be awarded to 25 outstanding young women who have exhibited leadership potential in their community, organization, and/or profession. (Deadline: 28 February)

  • Call for Applications Wells Mountain Initiative (WMI) Scholars Program. WMI’s Scholars Program provides undergraduate scholarships to developing country nationals to study in their home country or a neighboring country. WMF believes it is important to educate people locally and to encourage WMF Scholars to become change agents in their local communities. (Deadline: 1 March)

  • Call for Applications The Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme. On January 1 2020, the TEF Entrepreneurship Programme will open to entrepreneurs from across Africa, either with new startup ideas or existing businesses of less than 3 years existence, operating in any sector. Successful applicants will join the over 9,000 current beneficiaries, from 54 African countries, and receive business training, mentoring, a non-refundable $5,000 of seed capital and global networking opportunities. (Deadline: 1 March)

  • Call for Applications CODESRIA African Academic Diaspora Visiting Fellowships. The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) invites joint proposals from African academics in the Diaspora and in universities in Africa for visiting fellowships to African universities. This call targets African scholars in the Diaspora who are interested in being supported to spend some time in an African university to undertake specific academic activities aimed at strengthening teaching and research in the Social Sciences, Humanities and in Higher Education studies. The tenure of the visiting professorship will range from two (2) weeks to three (3) months. (Deadline: 10 March)

  • Call for Applications Jacobs Foundation Research Fellowship Program. The Jacobs Foundation Research Fellowship is now open for early career scholars aiming at improving the development and living conditions of children and youth or contributing to one of Jacobs Foundation’s thematic priorities. This includes, but not limited to Educational sciences, psychology, economics, sociology, family studies, media studies, political sciences, linguistics, neurosciences and medical sciences. Scholars who engage on interdisciplinary work on individual development and learning of children and youth, and who seek to combine multiple levels of analysis, are particularly encouraged to apply. (Deadline: 16 March)

  • Call for Proposals J-PAL Digital Identification and Finance Initiative in Africa (DigiFI Africa). J-PAL is excited to announce its second request for proposals for J-PAL Africa’s Digital Identification and Finance Initiative in Africa (DigiFI Africa), generously supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The DigiFI Africa funds evaluations that focus on the study of innovative government payment systems, and identification system reforms (see our framing paper). African Scholars (researchers who have completed their PhD and are based at academic institutions in Africa) are eligible to apply for travel/proposal development grants and up to $75,000 for a pilot study. Applicants are encouraged to reach out to the DigiFI team to discuss their proposed idea before the due date. (Deadline: 20 March)

  • Call for Application British Ecological Society Ecologists in Africa Research Grant. This grant provides support for Ecologists in Africa to carry out innovative ecological research. We recognise that ecologists in Africa face unique challenges in carrying out research; our grant is designed to support you to develop your skills, experience and knowledge base as well as making connections with ecologists in the developed world. We support excellent ecological science in Africa by funding services and equipment. (Deadline: 20 March)

  • Call for Submissions The 2020 Geneva Challenge. The Graduate Institute Geneva’s Advancing Development Goals International Contest for Graduate Students aims to present innovative and pragmatic solutions to address the challenges of social inclusion. The idea is to gather contributions that are both theoretically grounded and offer pragmatic solutions to a relevant international development problem stemming from an interdisciplinary collaboration between three to five enrolled master students from anywhere in the world. (Deadline: 23 March)

  • Call for Applications World Habitat Awards 2020. The World Habitat Awards recognise and highlight innovative, outstanding and sometimes revolutionary housing ideas, projects and programmes from across the world. More than 250 outstanding World Habitat Awards projects have been recognised over the years, demonstrating substantial, lasting improvements in living conditions. Each year two winners receive £10,000 each and a trophy, presented at a global UN-Habitat event. (Deadline: 23 March)

  • Call for Workshop Scholarships The Right Livelihood College Campus. The RLC Campus Bonn offers scholarships funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for PhD students from sub-Saharan Africa to participate in the international workshop on “Pathways of Environmental Justice in sub-Saharan Africa”, May 9-14, 2020. PhD students will be able to discuss their research with environmental activist, author and Director of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation Nnimmo Bassey, who received the Right Livelihood Award in 2010 as well as with Thuita Thenya, Vice Chairman of The Green Belt Movement in Kenya.   • Call for Applications L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science. The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science sub-Saharan Africa regional program aims to promote and encourage the participation of young African women in science. This program identifies and rewards young talented researchers in the formal sciences, life and environmental sciences, material sciences, engineering sciences and technological sciences. For this 11th edition, 20 endowments will be given to encourage young researchers currently in doctoral or post-doctoral studies to pursue a brilliant scientific career. (Deadline: 30 March)

  • Call for Applications AIMS Masters Degree in Mathematical Sciences. The African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Master’s degree in mathematical sciences is unique and at the forefront of innovation. Focusing on computer problem-solving and programming skills, it offers the opportunity to compete in the most advanced areas of mathematical sciences. Full scholarships covering tuition, accommodation, meals and travel expenses are also awarded to successful applicants. (Deadline: 31 March)

  • Call for Applications One Planet Fellowship 2020. Announced at the inaugural One Planet Summit held in Paris in December 2017, the One Planet Fellowship invests in high-potential early career researchers from Africa and Europe, and accelerates their scientific careers so that they are better able to develop relevant and gender-responsive climate adaptation solutions aimed at African smallholder farmers. In this call, the Fellowship is expanding into North Africa, targeting applications from young scientists from Morocco and Algeria in addition to the following sub-Saharan African countries; Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, and Zambia.   • Call for Applications The Academy of Medical Sciences. Global Challenges Research Fund Networking Grants aims to support cutting-edge interdisciplinary research that addresses the global issues faced by developing countries. The grant is targeted at experienced researchers who are looking to form new international collaboration, it provides up to £25,000 over one year to support collaborations between developing countries and the UK and to hold networking events aimed at addressing global challenges. (Deadline: 31 March)

  • Call for Applications École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). The Junior Faculty Development program is the first program launched within the framework of the “Excellence in Africa” initiative. It will pair up early-stage professors in Africa with EPFL professors, providing funding for a jointly-designed research project over a period of 4 to 5 years. The research project must be within the current domains of scientific or technological research activity at EPFL and in the course of the project, the Africa-based professor will complete a secondment of up to one year in the laboratory of his/her colleague at EPFL.   • Call for Applications The Right Livelihood College (RLC). The Right Livelihood College (RLC) at the Center for Development Research (ZEF), University of Bonn, offers a DAAD-funded PhD research scholarship on: Land degradation and Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration in Kenya. The PhD research project is aimed at addressing some of these concerns and scientific knowledge gaps by empirically assessing the potentials and challenges of FMNR in Kenya in an interdisciplinary way together with Kenyan partners.   • Call for Applications King’s College London. King’s College London is offering full scholarships to undertake a full-time PhD. The topic of the PhD should be relevant to the continent of Africa with a particular interest on interdisciplinary projects and should fall at the intersection of two or more of the following themes: Conflict, Peace and Security, Global Health, Security and Digital Technology.   • Call for Applications Microsoft Research EMEA PhD Award. The 2020 Microsoft Research EMEA PhD Award is offering PhD students research awards in computing related fields; All Data AI, Cloud Infrastructure, Confidential Computing, Future of Work, Healthcare Intelligence and Biological Computation. The Award recipients will receive $15,000 USD for academic year 2020–21 to help them complete research as part of their doctoral thesis work. (Deadline: 1 April)

  • Call for Applications University of Cambridge Centre of African Studies. The Centre of African Studies invites applications for a Visiting Research Fellowship. Applicants’ research interests should touch on one or more of the broad themes of environment, energy, land, or climate change. Reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the Philomathia Africa Programme, candidates with expertise in any field in the social sciences, arts or humanities are open to apply. The applicant should have a PhD submitted at the time of application and must hold a teaching or research position at an African university. (Deadline: 6 April)

  • Call for Applications The University of Louvain. The University of Louvain (UCLouvain) in Belgium holds a competition for awarding PhD scholarships to citizens of developing countries lasting up to 36 months. Scholarships are available to applicants working in a wide range of fields. (Deadline: 10 April)

  • Call for Applications Google PhD Fellowship Program. The Google PhD Fellowship Program is supporting graduate students as they pursue their PhD. The fellowship recognizes outstanding students who seek to influence the future of technology in the following fields, Computer Science, Computational Neuroscience, Machine Learning, Programming languages and Software Engineering, Quantum Computing and many more. Current undergraduate or masters students and professionals are open to apply. (Deadline: 15 April)

  • Call for Applications PRB Policy Communication Fellows Program. Population Reference Bureau (PRB) and the African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) are accepting applications for their 2020-2021 Policy Communication Fellows Program. The program aims to bridge the gap between research findings and the policy development process. It is open to individuals from eligible developing countries currently enrolled in academic institutions pursuing doctoral programs and who are between their 3rd and 5th year of studies. (Deadline: 15 April)

  • Call for Applications The XXII World Congress on Safety and Health at Work. The World Congress on Safety and Health at Work is offering a Fellowship Program for Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) professionals and others in the field. Successful recipients will receive funding for travel, accommodations and the Congress registration fee. (Deadline: 15 April)

  • Call for Applications AIMS NEI Fellowship Program for Women in Climate Change Science. The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI) is inviting interested female scientists to apply for the third round of the AIMS-NEI Fellowships for Women in Climate Change Science (WiCCS). Applicants must possess before the fellowship start date a doctorate in a quantitative discipline, including but not limited to applied mathematics, climatology, physics, computational chemistry, statistical ecology, computer science, theoretical biology, and engineering.   • Call for Applications International Centre for Genetic engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB). ICGEB offers competitive Pre-doctoral Fellowships in Life Sciences to highly motivated scientists wishing to pursue PhD research studies in a world-class scientific environment. Fellowships include participation in a competitive research programme, access to state-of-the-art facilities, participation in ICGEB Meetings, Seminars and Journal Clubs and a competitive stipend, plus full coverage of tuition fees and health insurance.   • Call for Applications The Mandela Rhodes Foundation. The Mandela Rhodes combines financial support with a leadership programme that will challenge you, grow you, and connect you to young African changemakers. The scholarship covers tuition for a one-year Honours degree or a two-year Masters degree in any field at a recognized South African institution of higher education. (Deadline: 16 April)

  • Call for Proposals The European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP). EDCTP invites proposals for collaborative clinical research studies, i.e. Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Actions (RIA), to support research activities in sub-Saharan Africa to manage and/or prevent the spread of the current COVID-19 outbreak. (Deadline: 17 April)

  • Call for Application International Society For Infectious Diseases (ISID). ISID and the Swiss Society for Infectious Diseases (SSI) jointly sponsor the SSI/ISID Infectious Diseases Research Fellowship Program. The purpose of this Fellowship Program is to support infectious disease physicians and scientists from under-resourced countries through multidisciplinary clinical and laboratory training at select biomedical institutions in Switzerland. Applicants must possess a M.D. or Ph.D. in a relevant field and hold a position at a medical, research or public health institution.(Deadline: 24 April)

  • Call for Applications Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention invites application for CDC Coronavirus Response Fellowship. Candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields.   • Call for Applications The Florence School of Regulation (FSR). FSR invites application for the annual Lights on Women scholarship. This aims to support motivated early- or mid-career women in their professional advancement with new or strengthened capabilities by providing free access to one of the FSR online courses on a wide variety of key energy regulation and policy topics starting in Autumn 2020.   • Call for Applications The African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS). The African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS) at the University of the Witwatersrand is seeking applications for MA and PhD scholarships for the 2021 academic year. The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) is offering approximately four research grants of $20,000 each to support projects related to women, victimization, and domestic violence, with particular emphasis on the impact of the current COVID-19 pandemic.   • Call for Applications The Alexander von humboldt Foundation. The Alexander von humboldt Foundation is inviting applications for the German Research Chair 'Mathematics and its Application' at African Institute for Mathematical Sciences - AIMS in Kigali, Rwanda as part of AIMS - Next Einstein Initiative. The call addresses mathematicians worldwide who hold a PhD, demonstrably conduct application-related research and have at least several years of experience in research and teaching as well as training students and (ideally) doctoral candidates.   • Call for Applications University of Copenhagen (UCPH). The Department of Communication, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Denmark, invites applications for a PhD position in the Marie Skłodowska-Curie network Train2Wind to be filled by 1 September 2020.   • Call for Applications African Economic Research Consortium (AERC). African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) is accepting applications for the AERC-World Bank visiting scholars programme. The Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria, calls for applications for full-time doctoral scholarships in the field of sexual and/or reproductive rights in the African region. The Generation Google Scholarship: for women in computer science was established to help aspiring computer scientists excel in technology and become leaders in the field.
