  • Call for Applications The International Crisis Group Postdoctoral Fellowship. The International Crisis Group (Crisis Group) and the Empirical Studies of Conflict Project (ESOC) seek applicants for a Postdoctoral Fellowship position. The fellowship will entail empirical research, policy analysis, and engagement with policymakers to prevent, resolve or better manage deadly conflict. (Deadline: 1 January)

  • Call for Applications The Charles E. Lindblom Memorial Fellowship. The Charles E. Lindblom Memorial Fellowship supports an interdisciplinary social science project that focuses on anticipatory social research. One fellowship of $7,500 will be offered annually to a doctoral candidate pursuing original and interdisciplinary research in economics, political science, sociology, anthropology, and/or history at one of the member institutions of the College and University Fund for the Social Sciences.   • Call for Applications Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellowship. The SSRC/JSPS Fellowship Program for ABDs and Recent PhDs provides promising and highly qualified researchers with opportunities to conduct research at leading universities and other research institutions in Japan for 1-12 month or 12-24 month terms. Projects need not be explicitly related to the study of Japan, but must propose work with colleagues and resources in Japan. The program especially encourages proposals for cooperative research with colleagues in Japan under the guidance of a senior host researcher. (Deadline: 5 January)

  • Call for Applications The British Council. The British Council, in partnership with the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH) at the University of Edinburgh, is offering a 7 month research fellowship for early-career researchers from Africa who are living and working on the continent. The fellowship will focus on decolonizing digital in the context of cultural and creative production and consumption in Africa and consumption of content originating from Africa in the UK and elsewhere in the world.   • Call for Applications EUTOPIA-SIF Post Doctoral Fellowships. The EUTOPIA European University is providing 20 post-doctoral fellowships, within the EUTOPIA Science and Innovation Fellowships Programme (EUTOPIA-SIF). The aim of the EUTOPIA-SIF programme is to enhance the research potential and career perspectives of outstanding young researchers from around the world. (Deadline: 11 January)

  • Call for Applications New Europe College-Institute for Advanced Study Fellowships. New Europe College-Institute for Advanced Study in Bucharest (Romania) launches the annual competition for the 2021/2022 Fellowships. Romanian and international scholars (at postdoctoral level) in all fields of the humanities and social sciences (including law and economics) are invited to apply. (Deadline: 15 January)

  • Call for Applications The Rijksmuseum Migelien Gerritzen Fellowship. The Rijksmuseum, Nethrelands, is accepting applications for the Migelien Gerritzen Fellowship, which welcomes proposals for conservation and scientific research that make use of the Rijksmuseum’s collection and resources and is open to MA graduates, as well as PhD students and post-doctoral candidates.   • Call for Applications Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine RESPOND-AFRICA Postgraduate Fellowship. Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine is inviting applications for the RESPOND-AFRICA Postgraduate Fellowship in Medical Statistics & Epidemiology. The scheme will provide funding for 2 years. The first year is to study for an MSc in Medical Statistics or Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The second year will be an attachment based at one of their partner institutions in Tanzania or Uganda working as a statistician or an epidemiologist to gain on-the-job training in clinical, public health or population based research in chronic diseases.   • Call for Applications The Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS) Scholarships for Female African Students. The Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies, BIGSAS, invites outstanding female scholars from the African continent to join an international community of scholars working in the field of African Studies. BIGSAS provides a centre for creative and innovative PhD training based on the inter- and multi-disciplinary research environment of the Institute of African Studies, IAS, at the University of Bayreuth, and the Cluster of Excellence ‘Africa Multiple: Reconfiguring African Studies’.   • Call for Applications United Nations Young Women Leaders Initiative. UN Women and UN Volunteers (UNV) are launching the new Young Women Leaders Initiative to create professional opportunities for leaders of tomorrow and further enhance diversity in UN Women. The UNV/UN Women Young Leaders Program invites applications from young women from the Global South who are committed to gender equality and women’s empowerment and to the mission and work of the United Nations. (Deadline: 25 January)

  • Call for Proposals Innovations for Poverty Action WWES Initiative. IPA’s RECOVR - Women’s Work, Entrepreneurship, and Skilling (WWES) Initiative aims to improve and deepen the existing data and evidence on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women and girls. The goal is to provide evidence-based insights and policy recommendations to address gender inequalities in the context of COVID-19 policy responses during the immediate crisis and extended recovery period. The WWES Initiative combines data collection efforts, research projects, and policy work, around two key themes: (1) women's work, entrepreneurship and time use and (2) youth skilling and school-to-work transitions. The focus countries of this initiative are Kenya and Bangladesh. (Deadline: 27 January)

  • Call for Proposals Cornell University STAARS Fellowship. The Structural Transformation of African Agriculture and Rural Spaces (STAARS) fellowship program, a multi-institution collaboration managed by Cornell University with support from the CGIAR Research Program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets (PIM), announces its annual call for research proposals. Early-career African researchers selected as STAARS Fellows in 2021 advance rigorous, policy-oriented research on the causal determinants of productivity and income growth, asset accumulation, rural employment and risk management in African agriculture and rural spaces.   • Call for Applications The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa Post-Doctoral Writing Fellowship. SSRC offers fellowships to support the completion of doctoral degrees and to promote next-generation social science research in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. The post-doctoral writing fellowship supports up to six months of completing an article or book manuscript through a stipend of up to US$3,000 featuring a thematic focus on peace, security, and development. (Deadline: 1 February)

  • Call for Applications The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) APN Individual Research Fellowships. The African Peacebuilding Network (APN) of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) invites research fellowship applications from African researchers, policy analysts, and practitioners working on conflict and peacebuilding issues at universities and research institutions; or regional, governmental, and non-governmental agencies or organizations in Africa.   • Call for Applications McKinsey & Company Women’s Global Operations Summit. McKinsey & Company Women’s Global Operations Summit is accepting applications from female professionals who have a background in engineering or business and (initial) work experience in operations.   • Call for Applications Ghent University Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from Developing Countries. With support from its “Special Research Fund” (BOF) Ghent University grants PhD “sandwich” scholarships to promising PhD students from developing countries who wish to carry out half of their PhD research at Ghent University (North) and half at a university in a developing country (South). (Deadline: 4 February)

  • Call for Nominations The Mawazo Institute African Women in Science E-book. Mawazo Institute is seeking nominees for its upcoming E-book profiling African women who are using science to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. We are looking for exceptional female African researchers, practitioners, innovators, educators, tinkerers and makers of all stripes who are helping the public and decision-makers navigate the current crises. This includes women who are working on research into the virus and its vaccines, as well as those engineering policy solutions that help mitigate the socio-economic and political effects of the pandemic, and much more.   • Call for Applications The British Institute in Eastern Africa (BIEA) Research Assistantships. BIEA is inviting applications for a three-year, full-time, research fellowship and research assistantship position in African Heritage Remote Sensing and GIS. Candidates must have qualifications in, and experience of archaeology, geography, heritage studies, geospatial sciences or related fields, and experience in remote sensing and GIS analysis. (Deadline: 12 February)

  • Call for Applications The Norbert Elias Fellowships. The Norbert Elias Fellowships invites applications from African senior researchers and postdocs from all disciplines to take part in the ZiF Research Group “Economic & Legal Challenges in the Advent of Smart Products”. In particular, applicants should demonstrate their willingness and ability to conduct high-level research in thematically relevant research fields such as innovation, industrial economics, law and economics, digitisation and smart products.   • Call for Applications The One Planet Fellowship. The One Planet Fellowship seeks to build a vibrant, highly connected, and inter-generational network of African and European scientists equipped to use a gender lens to help Africa’s smallholder farmers adapt to a changing climate.   • Call for Nominations The Royal Society Rising Star Africa Prize. The Royal Society Africa Prize and Rising Star Africa Prize nominations are open. The Royal Society Africa Prize is to recognise research scientists based in Africa who are making an innovative contribution to the sciences. Winners will receive a grant of £15,000 to support their research. The Royal Society Rising Star Africa Prize is to recognise early-career research scientists based in Africa who are making an innovative contribution to the physical, mathematical and engineering sciences. (Deadline: 15 February)

  • Call for Applications University of Michigan IRACDA Post-Doctoral Program. The Michigan Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award (IRACDA) Post-Doctoral Program is one of several NIH supported programs that trains post-doctoral fellows for research and teaching careers in academia. The goals of the program are to enhance research skills by providing mentored research experiences while developing teaching skills through assignments that promote the advancement of under-represented minorities. The Michigan IRACDA program operates through the departments of Biomedical Engineering and Molecular & Integrative Physiology. (Deadline: 15 February)

  • Call for Applications KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP) Researcher Officer Position. The KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP) is seeking a postgraduate researcher with a masters in molecular entomology to work in the biosciences department. The researcher will support the analysis of samples from trials in Mozambique and Tanzania seeking to evaluate the use of ivermectin mass drug administration for malaria vector control trial sites as part of the BOHEMIA project (Broad One-Health Endectocide-based Malaria Intervention in Africa). Additional responsibilities include supervising and training junior research staff, overseeing all laboratory activities, data collection, and contributing to publication writing and presentations, and more.   • Call for Applications University of Ghana Post-Doctoral Fellowship. The Institute of African Studies (IAS) at the University of Ghana, is inviting applications from suitably qualified persons for a post-doctoral fellowship for year 2021/2022 in line with a research project it is implementing. Eligible applicants should have obtained a Ph.D degree within the last 6 years (2015-2020) in: African History or African Studies. Each fellowship is worth USD 22,500. (Deadline: 25 February)

  • Call for Applications The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation Young African Scholars Program. The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation is accepting applications for the Young African Scholars program. The program includes a methods workshop, fieldwork research grants of $10,000 USD each, editorial and publication assistance, and sponsorship at an international conference to present research findings. (Deadline: 1 March)

  • Call for Applications The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation International Climate Protection Fellowship. The International Climate Protection Fellowships is open to prospective leaders working academically or practically in climate-relevant resource conservation in a non-European developing or transition country. The prospective leader will do a one-year research-related project in Germany that focuses on combating climate change, adaptation strategies, preserving ecosystems and biodiversity, or on the sustainable use of the seas and oceans. (Deadline: 1 March)

  • Call for Applications Bantry Marine Research Station First Stage Researcher Early Stage Researcher Positions. The Bantry Marine Research Station in Ireland is inviting applicants to apply for a 3-year research position working on a project studying seaweed, lumpfish and sea urchin, which will be assessed for their performance in poly-culture in Bantry Bay, SW Ireland, with a particular focus on the culture of echinoderms. Applicants should have a background in marine biology/aquaculture, should work well in a multidisciplinary team, and should be confident in both analytical lab and running field experiments. The PhD student will be based at BMRS and registered for their PhD at University College Cork. Two secondments are also planned to Wageningen University and the University of Stirling.   • Call for Applications Humboldt University of Berlin PhD Position in Biology. Applicants with an academic university degree in biology, molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry or related disciplines; a strong interest in the molecular mechanisms of infection biology and parasitology; a curiosity and willingness to develop ideas; and experimental experience in infection biology, molecular biology, cell biology or biochemistry are invited to apply for a PhD position in the field of parasitology, studying the malaria parasite’s (Plasmodium) exit from the liver, using methods including parasite genetics, microscopy, biochemistry and use of a rodent malaria model.   • Call for Applications British Ecological Society Ecologists in Africa Grants. The British Ecological Society’s grant provides support for Ecologists in Africa to carry out innovative ecological research. It is designed to support African ecologists to develop their skills, experience and knowledge base as well as making connections with ecologists internationally. The British Ecological Society supports excellent ecological science in Africa by funding services and equipment. (Deadline: 19 March)

  • Call for Applications L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Young Talents - Sub-Saharan Africa Program. The Fondation L’Oréal in partnership with UNESCO is offering 20 endowments to doctoral and postdoctoral students from sub-Saharan Africa currently working at or enrolled in institutions and universities in the region. Under the program, 15 doctoral students will receive €10,000 and 5 postdoctoral students will receive €15,000. The award also includes training in leadership, management, negotiation, and communication. (Deadline: 29 March)

  • Call for Applications University of Edinburgh Catto Combined MSc and PhD Scholarships. The Centre of African Studies, University of Edinburgh is offering 2 full scholarships for suitable applicants to study for an MSc in Africa and International Development, and a subsequent PhD in African Studies, with funding from the Stephen Gordon Catto Charitable Trust. The scholarship will cover full fees as well as a monthly maintenance stipend throughout the one-year MSc and subsequent three years of PhD study. (Deadline: 30 March).

  • Call for Applications The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) Master’s in Mathematical Sciences. AIMS invites applications for the Master's in mathematical sciences. Applicants must hold or expect to obtain by the date of commencement of AIMS training a 4-year university degree in mathematics or any other science/engineering discipline with a significant mathematics component. (Deadline: 31 March)

  • Call for Applications The Future Food Initiative. The ETH Zurich and EPFL Future Food Swiss Research Initiative Postdoctoral Fellowship provides personal research funds for three years that enable fellows to work on their projects. The goal of the initiative is to expand research and education in the area of food and nutrition sciences; the fellowship programme within the initiative aims at bringing together competences from academic and industrial research in this field. (Deadline: 31 March)

  • Call for Applications Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme. The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year to students from select developing countries who lack access to other means of funding their studies. The Foundation gives prioritises requests for Master's level courses but considers applications for PhD programmes for outstanding students. The scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year. (Deadline: 31 March)

  • Call for Applications Global Water Partnership (GWP) Youth Leaders Fellowship The Global Water Partnership (GWP) Youth Leaders Fellowship aims to support and empower young people in driving the transformation required to improve investment in water security and sustainable sanitation in Africa. The fellowship offers six to nine month fellowships during which applicants will help implement the African Union’s Africa Water Investment Program. Young African professionals with masters degrees living in African Union Member states in the fields of water, climate, environment and natural resources, and more are eligible to apply. Benefits include mentorship, training, technical support, a stipend, and accommodation and travel expenses. (Deadline: 31 March)

  • Call for Application European Union and EuropeanUni's School for Transnational Governances Young African Leaders Programme The European Union and EuropeanUni's School of Transnational Governance Young African Leaders fellowship is a three-month fully-funded opportunity for beneficiaries to develop their policy work and professional skills by taking part in workshops, trainings, conferences, study visits, and field trips . The programme is open to mid-career African professionals in civil service, media , business, and NGOs and benefits include a monthly grant of €2,500. (Deadline: 31 March)

  • Call for Expressions of Interest IDRC-SIDA Artificial Intelligence for Development in Africa (AI4D Africa) Program Managing Organization. The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) are accepting expressions of interest from individual organizations or groups of organizations from low and lower-middle income countries in Sub-Saharan Africa with a proven track record in the design, development and scaling of climate change and artificial intelligence (AI) innovations to host the Managing Organization (Hub) for Responsible Artificial Intelligence for Climate Action Innovation Research Network in Africa. The benefits include a grant of CAD $1.2 million over the course of 32 months. (Deadline: 5 April

  • Call for Applications UNU-IAS PhD in Sustainability Science 2021. The United Nations University
    Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) is accepting applications for its PhD programme in Sustainability Science, a three-year programme that aims to produce scholars who will become key researchers in the field of sustainability science. The programme takes an innovative approach to sustainability, seeking to promote a better understanding of the issues by incorporating global change perspectives, specifically those related to climate change and biodiversity.   • Call for Applications TWAS Research Grants Programme in Basic Sciences. The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Research Grants Programme in Basic Sciences was established to meed the needs of researchers in developing countries, particularly those attached to institutions that lack appropriate research facilities. Grants can be awarded for research projects in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics either to individual young researchers, or to research units, in science-and-technology-lagging countries (S&TLC) identified by TWAS, to enable them to purchase the research facilities they need to enhance their productivity. (Deadline: 14 April)

  • Call for Applications TWAS Research Grants Programme in Basic Sciences (Groups).   • Call for Applications Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) PhD Fellowships. The OWSD PhD Fellowship offers full-time or sandwich fellowships to women scientists from science- and technology-lagging countries (STLCs) to undertake PhD research in the natural, engineering and information technology sciences at a host institute in another developing country in the Global South. Benefits include a monthly stipend, financing to attend international conferences, the opportunity to attend regional science communications workshops, and support for tuition and registration fees. (Deadline: 15 April)

  • Call for Applications Mandela Rhodes Scholarship. The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship offers financial support and a leadership programme to young African changemakers. The programme covers tuition for a one-year Honours degree or a two-year Masters degree in any field at a recognised South African institution of higher education. This includes tuition and registration fees, allowances for study materials, research, and medical aid, accommodation and meals, personal allowance and economy class travel to and from recipients’ home countries to their universities in South Africa at the beginning and end of their degrees.   • Call for Applications The African Food Fellowship. Wageningen University & Research and Wasafiri, with support from the IKEA Foundation have  jointly developed The African Food Fellowship, a 10-month virtual  food systems leadership programme . The fellowship is open to Kenyan residents under 45 years old in aquaculture, agri-finance and horticulture who  aim to champion  fairer, healthier, regenerative food systems for the future. Benefits include an inaugural fee waiver, world class knowledge from experts and mentors, and personal leadership development and networking. (Deadline: 16 April)

  • Call for Applications  École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) 100 PhDs for Africa Programme. The Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) and École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) are accepting applications for the 100 PhDs for Africa programme from science and engineering graduates from African countries who are enrolled in African academic institutions, reside in African countries for the duration of their PhD, and have an outstanding academic track record. The programme is for PhD projects in all disciplines that are within its doctoral school. Benefits include  funding of a maximum of 80,000 Swiss francs in total for a period of at most  54 months. Eligible costs include living allowance, tuition fees, research costs and colloquia. (Deadline: 20 April)

  •  Call for Applications The Harvard Global Health Institute LEAD Fellowship. The Harvard Global Health Institute and the Women Health Initiative at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health is offering a year-long virtual fellowship to women in public health from all over the world. It is  designed to promote leadership skills in women from low- and middle-income countries who will, in turn, mentor future female leaders in global health. Benefits include access to world-class faculty, senior mentorship, development of a custom curriculum aligned to one's unique personal growth, tailored leadership training programs, networking opportunities and independent project work.   • Call for Applications The International Statistics and Epidemiology Group (ISEG) Postgraduate Training Fellowship In Medical Statistics for African Scientists The International Statistics and Epidemiology Group (ISEG) Postgraduate Training Fellowship in Medical Statistics for African Scientists is open to research students from Sub-Saharan Africa seeking to undertake MSc training in Medical Statistics at the London School of Hygiene and tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Fellows will receive mentorship, supervision and support during the fellowship, followed by a year working as a statistician at one of their partner centres in Africa. (Deadline: 25 April)

  • Call for Applications Center for Research Collection PhD Fellowships. The Center for Research Collections offers three- to- six-month fellowships to postdoctoral scholars in any area of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences around the world, to carry out research based on any of the heritage Collections held at the University of Edinburgh. The benefits include a monthly stipend, travel allowance, university mentor allocation from the Center for Research Collection (CRC), dedicated office space, university email and library access.   • Call for Applications Graduate Applications International Network (GAIN) The Graduate Applications International Network (GAIN) is accepting applications from individuals from any country in Africa with Bachelor’s (or Master’s) degree in economics and  related fields who  want to have a career in academic research or evidence-based policymaking. The programme runs from May to December 2021 and consists of an 8 Month Webinar Series on every aspect of the graduate application process and a mentorship scheme. There may be financial support to cover the costs incurred in the graduate application process, which may be prohibitive for prospective students from low-income countries. (Deadline: 11 May)

  • Call for Applications Harvard University Center for African Studies Postdoctoral Research Fellowships 2021/2022. The Harvard University Center for African Studies Postdoctoral Research Fellowships Program is open to applications from African based young African researchers who intend to return or work in African academia. The program is a 18-month postdoctoral fellowship with 12 months spent at the fellows’ home institution and six months spent in stipend-supported residency at Harvard University that aims to have fellows conducting independent research, publishing, and increasing knowledge in their fields of study that will be beneficial to the African continent. (Deadline: 17 May)

  • Call for Applications AAAS-TWAS Course on Science Diplomacy The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and The World Academy of Sciences( TWAS) are seeking young scientists (40 years and below) for a virtual AAAS-TWAS course on Science Diplomacy from 30 August to 3 September 2021. While not required, applications are invited from ‘participant pairs’, consisting of a young scientist and policymaker. Both participants in the participant pair should be living and/or working in the same country. However, if a co-applicant is from a different country, this will be considered if suitable justification is provided. Women are encouraged to apply and priority will be given to developing countries. (Deadline 31 May)

  • Call for Applications The African Plant Nutrition Graduate Student Scholar Award Program 2021. The African Plant Nutrition Institute (APNI) is open to graduate students in Africa currently enrolled in M.Sc., M.Phil., or Ph.D. programs, with students specializing in the science of plant nutrition in fields such as agronomy, soil science, horticultural science, and tree crop science especially encouraged to apply. Benefits include a grant of $2,000 (U.S. Dollars).(Deadline: 31 May)

    June 2021

  • Call for Applications FIG Foundation Ph.D. Scholarship 2021. The FIG Foundation is now receiving applications for the 2021 FIG Foundation Ph.D. Scholarship. Applicants must be studying for a PhD degree in a surveying/geomatics academic programme in a low-income, lower-middle or upper-middle income country, must have had a paper accepted by a peer reviewed international journal, and should not have submitted their final thesis. The FIG Foundation will be providing scholarships of up to 4,000 euros plus possible funding for conference travel to PhD students. (Deadline: 1 June)

  • Call for Applications Quantum Leap Africa PhD Scholarships in Data Science 2021. Quantum Leap Africa with the Africa Institute for Mathematical Science (AIMS)-Carnegie is offering a 3 year fully funded PhD Scholarships in Data Science to Masters students who are African nationals and will be completing their studies by September 2021 in areas of mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, physics or other relevant fields. Benefits include stipend, equipment, health insurance, relocation costs, conference attendance, direct cost to graduating institution such as tuition fees and registration fees. (Deadline: 1 June)
