January 2022

  • Call for Applications 2022-23 Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity Programme. The Atlantic Fellows for Social and Economic Equity programme is seeking residential and non-residential fellows to participate in modules dedicated to understanding and challenging social and economic inequalities. Residential fellows will also undertake a full-time, one-year MSc in Inequalities and Social Science at the London School of economics. Applicants living in the Global South are especially encouraged. . Benefits include full tuition fees, an £19,000 stipend to cover living costs for residential fellows, and a £10,000 grant to support project work for non-residential fellows. (Deadline: 10 January)

  • Call for Applications International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology WE-STAR Fellowships 2022. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) and the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) are accepting applications for a 6- to 12-month Fellowship programme to perform research work on biotechnology and related fields, including Health (Infectious Diseases and Non-Communicable Diseases), Sustainable and Effective Agriculture, Industrial Biotechnology and Renewable Energy at the ICGEB laboratories in Trieste (Italy), New Delhi (India) and Cape Town (South Africa). Applicants must be early-career women scientists who are nationals of ICGEB member states in the African continent and are enrolled in or have completed their PhD programmes. Benefits include a monthly stipend of up to Euro 1300 for PhD students or Euro 2000 for postdoctoral fellows as well as coverage of travel expenses. (Deadline 28 January)

  • Call for Applications Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa: 2022 Doctoral Dissertation Proposal Fellowship. The Social Science Research Council is accepting applications for the Next Generation Social Science Research in Africa Doctoral Dissertation Proposal Fellowship, which aims to support dissertation research on peace, security and development topics. Applicants must be citizens of a sub-Saharan African country, must hold master’s degrees, and must be current or prospective PhD Students enrolled in or affiliated with an institution in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda. Benefits include support for research costs of up to US$3,000 and two workshops each year designed to help fellows create networks, develop and strengthen their research questions and methods, engage key literature in their fields, and finalize their doctoral research proposals.   • Call for Applications Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa: 2022 Postdoctoral Writing Fellowship. The Social Science Research Center is accepting applications for its Next Generation Social Science Research in Africa Postdoctoral Writing Fellowship, which aims to support the completion of doctoral degrees focused on peace, security, and development topics. Applicants must be citizens of a sub-Saharan African country, must hold a doctoral degree from and be currently affiliated with an accredited university in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda and must be a past recipient of at least one Next Generation Social Sciences Doctoral Dissertation fellowship. Benefits include stipend of up to US$3,000. (Deadline: 1 February 2022)

  • Call for Applications ISNAD-Africa Mentoring for Research Programme 2022. The International Support Network for African Development’s (ISNAD-Africa) Mentoring for Research Programme (MRP) is accepting applications from postgraduate (master’s and doctoral) students in any discipline at African universities who are conducting research on sustainable energy, environment, climate change, and other green growth topics for their theses . Benefits include support from a mentor to structure your research, support to communicate your research with relevant stakeholders, and full-funding for the best-performing mentees to participate in a one-month residential UNEP/UNESCO/BMU International Short Course on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in Dresden, Germany.   • Call for Applications British Institute in East Africa (BIEA) 2022 Research Fellowship for Early Career East African Researchers. The British Institute in East Africa is accepting applications for a one-year Research Fellowship Programme at their research hub in Nairobi, Kenya. Eligible applicants must be early career researchers in humanities and social sciences from the East African Community (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda) who have successfully completed their doctoral studies within the last 5 years. (Deadline: 15 February)

  • Call for Applications The World Bank Group-Africa Education Fellowship Programme.  The World Bank Group-Africa is accepting applications for its Education Fellowship, which will allow participants to work with the World Bank to prepare them for careers in development, international institutions, and so on. Applicants must be Sub-Saharan Africa nationals who are either  Master’s degree holders with three to four years of relevant experience, Ph.D. candidates in their last year of enrollment, or recent graduates within three years of Ph.D. completion focusing on research, economic policy, technical assistance, and/or lending operations that contribute to the WBG goal of eliminating poverty and increasing shared prosperity. Benefits include six-months hands-on experience at the World Bank Group headquarters in Washington- D.C. (Deadline: 28 February)

  • Call for Applications The Eisenhower Fellowship 2022 Program for Global Mid- Career Professionals. The Eisenhower Fellowship 2022 Program for Global Mid- Career Professionals is accepting applications for a mixed in-person and virtual five-week program during which they will develop a project, foster professional relationships and launch collaborations with American counterparts. Applications will be accepted from people all over the world who are between the age of 32 years and 45 years, highly proficient in English, and have a track record of leadership. Benefits include a one full academic year of intense post-graduate studies and hands-on work experience. (Deadline: 1 March)

  • Call for Applications British Ecological Society Ecologists in Africa Grants 2022 The British Ecological Society’s 2022 Ecologists in Africa Grantis open to  applications from ecologists working for a university or research institution in Africa (including field centers, NGOs, museums). Applicants must be citizens of a country in Africa or its associated islands that is a low-income or lower-middle-income economy according to World Bank, with exclusion of  Botswana, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Libya, Namibia and South Africa and must carry out grant-supported research in a country in Africa or its associated islands.  Benefits include funding of up to £8,000 for research expenses and the opportunity to apply for an additional £2,000 travel grant. (Deadline: 18 March)

  • Call for Applications Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program 2022/2023.  The World Bank Robert S. McNamara Fellowship Programme is accepting applications from nationals of World Bank Member countries, with preference to nationals of developing countries, to participate in rigorous policy-relevant research with World Bank research economists as part of a full-time, residential fellowship programme in Washington DC. Applicants should be no more than 35 years of age by June 30 2022, graduates of master’s level studies or currently pursuing a PhD in Economics or related field to participate. Benefits include an income of up to $ 42,750 net all through the 8-month duration of the fellowship. (Deadline: 4 April)

  • Call for Applications The European University Institute (EUI) Young African Leaders Programme 2022. The Young African Leadership Programme funded by the European Commission is a fully-funded 3-month Fellowship that aims to catalyze and foster changes envisioned in the Africa Union’s Agenda 2063 and the Africa-EU Partnership. Applicants should be  African nationals under the age of 35 who reside in Africa and have at least 7 years work experience as policy-makers, diplomats, and professionals in national and local authorities, regional, continental, international organizations and development partners.. Benefits include a grant of up to €2,500 per month for the duration of the fellowship as well as conferences and study visits in Europe. (Deadline: 7 April)

  • Call for Applications 2022 Google Africa PhD Fellowship Programme for African Graduate Students. The Google Africa PhD Fellowship Programme is an up to 3-year programme that supports graduate students pursuing PhDs while also providing mentorship opportunities. It is open to PhD students from the African continent who are in the early stages of degrees  at an African university in a research area relevant to computer science and related fields.    Current undergraduate and masters students can also apply.  Benefits include a stipend of  $30,000 that covers a stipend, research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel, and a Google research mentor. (Deadline: 27 April)

  • Call for Applications  The BeyGOOD 2022 Global Citizen Fellowship for Young Africans.  The  Global Citizen is accepting applications for a one-year long fellowship programme from young African changemakers from Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa who have at least a matric or secondary school certificate.. Applicants must be able to house themselves in Johannesburg or Lagos for the duration of the program. Kenyan applicants can be based anywhere in the country, and will participate virtually. (Deadline: 29 April)

  • Call for Applications The Einstein Forum and the Wittenstein Foundation 2023 Fellowship Programme. The Einstein Forum and the Wittenstein Foundation are accepting applications from all over the world for a fellowship programme for outstanding young thinkers who wish to pursue a project in a different field from that of their previous research. Applicants must be under 35 and hold a university degree in the humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences and will be expected, at the end of the programme, to present their project in a public lecture at the Einstein Forum and at the Wittenstein Foundation. Benefits include, living accommodations for 5-6 months, a stipend of EUR10,000, and reimbursement of travel expenses. (Deadline: 15 May)

  • Call for Applications NedBank Quants Graduate Programme 2023 for Young South African Graduates. Nedbank Quant is accepting applications from young South Africans registered for a postgraduate qualification in Applied or Pure Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Financial Engineering and Quantitative Risk Management for a 2023 Graduate Programme that offers exceptional quantitative and capital risk management exposure through bank-wide rotation opportunities over two years graduate experience.   • Call for Applications ASRIC Euro-Mediterranean University of Fes (UEMF) PhD Scholarships 2022/2023 for African Students

    The African Scientific, Research and Innovation Council (ASRIC) is accepting applications for a one-year doctoral research work scholarship at the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fes, Morocco from African PhD students who are 35 years and below, have a Msc degree in Science and Engineering, Diploma or Engineering Diploma, and are nationals of the AU member states.  Benefits include tuition fees of about USD9,000, an annual return ticket from home country with maximum contribution of USD1,000 in the summer vacation, stipend allowance of USD 1,000 monthly for 11 months a year (Deadline: 30 June)

  • Call for Applications The Babro Klein Fellowship Programme 2023/2024 for Senior and Early Career Scholars Worldwide

    The Babro Kleine is a one year research fellowship which intends to advance research on cultural and social diversity, cultural heritage and creativity, societal structures and public resistance, and varieties of cultural expressions in local and global perspectives. The programme gives fellows the opportunity to concentrate on their own research interests, free from the teaching and administrative obligations of ordinary university life. Applicants must have held a PhD for at least 3 years and have a track record of independent contributions beyond post-doctoral level, including significant publications. Benefits include a monthly salary of up to Swedish Krona (SEK) 45,000 and accommodation for fellows who do not live in the Stockholm-Uppsala region. (Deadline: 1 July)

  • Call for Applications the Climate Change Media Partnership (CCMP) 2022 Reporting Fellowships to COP27. The Climate Change Media Partnership (CCMP), led by the Earth Journalism Network and the Stanley Center for Peace and Security, 2022 Reporting Fellowship Program is open to journalists from low-middle income countries seeking to cover climate negotiations for their home audiences during the COP27 Proceedings. Applicants should have previous experience in reporting climate issues, be able to travel to Egypt to attend COP27 in person, and must provide a letter of support from an editor, producer or supervisor. Benefits include non-refundable economy-class airline tickets, accommodation, meals, travel insurance (including emergency COVID-19 coverage) as well as mentorship and networking from senior journalists.   • Call for Application From Linear to Circular: Africa Workshop 2022 for Postgraduate Students and Professionals. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation is accepting applications from students who are in their final year of undergraduate or taking their postgraduate or those that are at the start of their career in Circular economy and live and work on the African continent for From Linear to Circular: Africa, a 5 day face to face workshop in Kigali, Rwanda focused on the circular economy . Benefits include partial bursaries and networking circular economy experts and practitioners (Deadline: 6 July)

  • Call for Applications The World Academy of Sciences(TWAS)- National Research Fund (NRF) Doctoral Fellowship Programme 2022 for Study in South Africa. 

    The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and South Africa’s National Research Foundation (NRF) are accepting applications for doctoral fellowships hosted at South African institutions from scientists who are not living or studying in South Africa as of 2022 who are citizens or permanent residents of other developing countries. Applicants must be 32 years of age by December 31 of the year of application, must have obtained an MSc degree in Natural Sciences, and must register on a full-time basis at a South African university in 2023. Benefits include partial cost of study funding to cover tuition fees and accommodation costs up to R 101,196 per annum per student, a return economy flight ticket, and VISA and/or study permit costs.   • Call for application Swansea University PhD Research Scholarship: Biology of Sea Turtles in The Western Indian Ocean (Rs118). Swansea University in partnership with the Bertarelli Foundation is accepting applications for a fully-funded PhD research scholarship to study biological sciences with a focus on the conservation of sea turtles in the Western Indian Ocean from researchers living in South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, Mauritius, Comoros, Tanzania, Seychelles, and Kenya. Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree at a first-class or 2.1 level in Biosciences or a related subject, and/or a distinction at a master’s level in Marine Biology. Benefits include fully-funded tuition fees and an annual stipend of up to Sterling Pounds 16,062 with the availability of additional research expenses. (Deadline: 15 July)

  • Call for Applications French Embassy Regional Scholarships 2022/2023. The French Embassy in Kenya and Somalia is accepting applications for 2 one-year regional scholarships, respectively in Engineering Sciences and Humanities and Social Science, that will enable Kenyan students who are Kenyan citizens to pursue their studies in quality universities within the African continent. Applicants must have obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Humanities and Social Sciences. Benefits include a fully-funded scholarship covering a monthly allowance, travel expenses, tuition fees (up to 3000 per year), and social insurance. (Deadline: 15 July)

  • Call for Applications The IMU – Simons African Fellowship Program 2022/ 2023 for Africans from Developing Countries. The International Mathematical Union (IMU), with support from the Simons Foundation, is accepting applications for the African Fellowship Programme, which supports research sabbaticals for African fellows to travel to an internationally known mathematical center of excellence for collaborative research. Applicants should hold a valid doctoral degree in mathematics and must work as a mathematician in a university or equivalent higher education in an African developing country. Benefits include a grant of up to 5,000 USD that covers travel and basic living expenses (Deadline: 15 July)

  • Call for Applications The Mawazo Institute and RWTH Aachen University (Germany) Summer School in Computational Biology for Sustainable Environment. The Mawazo Institute and the Computational Life Science group from the RWTH Aachen University (Germany) are accepting applications for a Computational Life Science Summer School in Watamu, Kenya. The programme is open to people all over the world who are currently enrolled in a Masters or PhD programme, received a doctoral degree within the past 2 years, or are researchers at a not-for-profit organization in the environmental and/or conservation space. Priority will be given to applicants who are residents of the area and young parents or caregivers. Benefits include fully funded participation in the School, a total cover of accommodation costs for the duration of the School, travel grants to Watamu, and on-site childcare upon request.   • Call for Applications The AWIEF-AfDB “Solutions Catalysing Increased Access to Capital for the Success of Women Entrepreneurs” Programme. The Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Africa (AWIEF) and Africa Development Bank (AfDB) Group are accepting applications to participate in any one of the following 4 programme components: the AWIEF Growth Accelerator; eCommerce Capacity Development; Digital Skills from women-owned and women-led small and medium enterprises (WSMEs). Applicants must be WSMEs registered and operating in Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, Rwanda, Malawi, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. (Deadline: 18 July )

  • Call for Applications African Studies Center Leiden (ASCL) 2022 Visiting Fellowship Programme for African Researchers. The African Studies Center at Leiden University is accepting applications for a 90-day Visiting Fellowship from African researchers and academics seeking to use their time in Leiden for data analysis and/or writing, often on a joint project with one or more ASCL staff members. Applicants must hold a PhD degree, be actively pursuing a research career, have published books or journals in recent years that meet international standards, and be in accordance with visa regulations and be ready to return to their country of residence upon completion of fellowship. Benefits include an economy class return ticket, a daily stipend to cover daily expenses, accommodation in Leiden, medical/liability insurance, and use of office and library facilities.   • Call for Applications The Deutsche Welle (DW) Akademie Constructive Journalism Fellowship 2022 for TV and Video Journalists (Fully Funded to Germany) The Deutsche Welle (DW) Akademie is accepting applications for the 2022 Constructive Journalism Fellowship, which aims to train Fellows in constructive storytelling and visual language, how to approach contentious issues, and how to sell and distribute a constructive story. Applicants should be media professionals who are residents of Sub-Saharan African Countries and must have a valid passport, be able to travel for one-week training in March 2023, have a good command of the English language, and have access to technical equipment and a laptop for an online workshop. Benefits include travel, hotel and visa costs, mentorship and financial support of up to 3000 euros for video production and networking opportunities. (Deadline: 31July)

  • Call for Papers The Strathmore University Resilient Urban Communities - Conference for Researchers based in Africa 

    The Strathmore University in partnership with The  East African Philanthropy Network is accepting applications for a call for papers for the Resilient Urban Communities Conference and seminar focusing on social enterprises (SE) and non-profit organizations(NPOs) for PhD and Early Career researchers based in Africa. Applicants for the PhD seminar should be doctorate students in early stages of their work trying to set their research career on track, be able to participate in the entire PhD seminar held in Nairobi Kenya, be conducting research connected to non-profit organizations and social enterprises in deprived communities and in policy fields such as housing, education and social services. Applicants for the ECR should be researchers with at most 5 years PhD qualification and participate in the entire ECR seminar held in Nairobi. (Deadline: 3 August)

  • Call for Applications Women for the Environment Africa’s 2023 Cohort 

    WE Africa is accepting applications for a year-long fellowship that offers a unique opportunity for women leaders in the Environmental space across Africa to engage in tailored online learning, one on one coaching, and two in-person retreats for intensive community building and mentoring. Applicants must be African nationals or have permanent residency for a minimum of 15 years, a minimum of 15 years working in the environmental space in government, NGO or private sector, a commitment to contribute $500 towards the cost of the course and cover travel costs to the two in-person retreats for an estimated $ 1500.  A limited number of scholarships are also available to help offset costs for selected participants.   • Call for Applications TWAS-CUI Postgraduate Fellowship Programme 2023 for Young Scientists from Developing Countries (Funded)

    The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) - COMSATS is accepting applications for the TWAS - COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) 2023 Fellowship Programme for Young Scientists Young Scientists from developing countries other than Pakistan, who wish to obtain All or Part of their PhD in Social or Natural Sciences for a duration of a minimum of 6 months or a maximum of 3 years and up to 18 months in Part Time. Applicants must be nationals of developing countries other than Pakistan, hold an Msc degree (with Research) in Field of Natural Sciences and maximum age of 35 years old by 31 December of the year of application. For Full-time Fellowship applicants must be willing to register at CUI, Pakistan and have 18 years of education up to Msc/ Mphil degree. For Part-time Fellowship applicants must be registered PhD students in developing countries, provide Official Acceptance Letter to CUI, provide evidence of proficiency in English, provide evidence of return to the resident country upon completion of Fellowship and not take up any other assignments during the period of fellowship. Benefits include a monthly stipend to cover living costs such as food, accommodation, and health insurance. (Deadline: 31 August)

  • Call for Application Gender Responsive Agriculture Systems Policy-Grasp Fellowship for Policymakers and Researchers in Africa

    The African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) is accepting applications for a call for the Gender Responsive Agriculture Systems Policy-Grasp Fellowship funded by the USAID for African female policymakers and researchers in Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. Applicants must have at least 10 years of experience in the policy field in agriculture and food systems at national, regional, or continental levels. AWARD Policy Fellows, will get customized training in mentoring, leadership, negotiation skills, and integrating gender in policy. The AWARD Policy Fellows will sharpen their skills to design and implement gender-responsive policies, analyze policies from a gender perspective, foster innovative policy-oriented projects, and lead policy processes.(Deadline: 31 August)

  • Call for Applications The NVIDIA Graduate Fellowship Programme  2023/2024 for Doctorate Students

    The NVIDIA Graduate Fellowships Programme is accepting applications from PhD students working in the fields of  Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Autonomous Vehicles, Computer Graphics, Robotics, AI for Healthcare, High-performance computing, and related fields. Applicants must have completed their first year of PhD level studies, have majors in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, System Architecture, Electrical Engineering, or a related area. Applicants must be engaged in active research as part of their PhD thesis and enrolled as a full-time PhD students during the 2023/2024 academic year and must be available to complete a summer internship prior to the start of their fellowship year. Benefits include funding of up to USD50, 000, access to conduct work with access to NVIDIA products, technology, and some of the most talented minds in the field, and a summer internship preceding the Fellowship year. .   • Call for Applications The Innovation for Change (I4C) West African regional Connector

    The Innovation for Change (I4C) African Hub is accepting applications for a West African regional connector/RC to encourage collaborations with organizations in the West African region and to support key areas in building camaraderie through mobilization, creating digital resources, and offering legal solutions. Applicants must have an application letter/ expression of interest detailing why their organization is a good fit, an organization profile, organization registration certificate, bank letter of good standing, and a letter of support from a CSO partner. Benefits include Networking and collaboration opportunities, being part of a civic movement, and exchanging lessons learned and best practices. (Deadline: 9 September) 

  • Call for Applications The Organization for Women In Science for the Developing World (OWSD)-Elsevier Foundation 2023 Awards for Early Career Women Scientists in the Developing World.

    The Organization for Women In Science for the Developing World (OWSD) - Elsevier Foundation Awards for Early Career Women Scientists in the Developing World is accepting applications for the 2023 OWSD - Elsevier Foundation Awards for Early Career Women Scientists in Developing World. Applicants must be women scientists (from STEM disciplines) in the Early Career stage (within ten years of earning their PhD degree), whose current scientific research is related to the area of food security, agricultural productivity, and sustainable food production, and who have made demonstrable contributions to the achievement of the SDG2 (Zero Hunger). In addition, applicants must have lived and worked for at least 5 of the last 15 years in one of the 66 scientifically and technologically lagging countries (STLCs). Benefits include a cash prize of up to USD 5,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to attend the Awards Ceremony to be held at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in March 2023.   • Call for Applications The African Network for Economics of Learning, Innovation and Competence Building Systems Visiting Fellowships 2023 for Young African PhD Students.

    The African Network for Economics of Learning, Innovation and Competence Building Systems (AfricaLics) is accepting applications for a 1 year  AfricaLics PhD Visiting Fellowship programme (2023 cohort) that combines online pre and post-activities with a study period of 3 months at University of Johannesburg, South Africa focused on innovation and development.  Applicants must be PhD student candidates enrolled at African universities whose study focuses on relationship between innovation, economic, social or and environmentally sustainable development, , who have completed their first year of studies by December 2022, come from low-income countries and already secured funding for their PhD studies. Benefits include return flight costs from their  nearest international airport, health insurance on reimbursement basis, stipend of up to 5,900 South African Rand for visiting scholars, fixed amount to cover student participation in course activities, and funding for organizations' trilateral meetings between PhD student and supervisor from home institution.   • Call for Applications The Organization for Women In Science for the Developing World (OWSD)2022 Early Career Fellowship Programme for Women Scientists

    The  Organization for Women In Science for the Developing World (OWSD) Early Career Fellowship Programme is accepting applications for a 3-year fellowship programme to support early career women scientists to lead research projects in countries that have been identified as lacking in scientific and technological resources. Applicants must be residents in one of the listed Science and Technology lagging countries (STLCs) for at least 5 years, provide proof of employment at a university or a research institute where the research project will be carried out and the institution be listed in the STLCs, provide evidence that they will receive a salary for the fellowship duration and completed their PhDs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics within the last 10 years and are employed at an academic or scientific research institution listed in the STLCs. Benefits include an award of up to USD50, 000 and funding for research-related costs; equipment, consumables, research visits, exchanges and programmes, teaching and assistance, information resources, product development and linking with industry, outreach, communications, and networking. Fellows will also take part in two training workshops on Leadership and Entrepreneurial skills. (Deadline: 19 September)

  • Call for Applications 8th Edition of Science by Women Programme for Visiting Senior Research Fellowships in Spanish Centres of Excellence

    The Women for Africa Foundation (FMxA) in collaboration with Spanish Centers of Excellence is accepting applications for African women researchers and scientists to be based in Spain.
