TV47: Curbing Gender Based Violence - December 2022 

On Saturday December 10th, Kenyan media channel TV47 featured an interview with Mawazo Institute Alumna Judy Ngina during their 9 O'clock news segment. December 10th marked the International Human Rights Day as well as the end of the16 days global campaign to end violence against women and girls. Judy spoke as an experienced Refugee Protection Officer at Dadaab Camp, where she worked for four years. She challenged governmental and non governmental agencies to take meaningful actions to meet Kenya's goal of ending GBV by 2026, stating that "we need more than mere words."

 

 

Daily Nation: Inequality, Women in research jumping higher hurdles - November 2022

The Daily Nation profiled three Mawazo Alumni: Yvonne Githiora, Evaline Sang', and Dr. Thérèse Umuhoza. The researchers outlined their own personal experiences as women in academia, emphasizing the constraints that appeared in their PhD journies due to their gender.  The article grounds Unesco's alarming statistics, that women take 41% longer to complete their PhD's than their male counterparts, with the stories of Mawazo Alumni. CEO Dr. Fiona Moejes then explains how the Mawazo Institute offers meaningful support to our Fellows. 

 

 

The Star: Women researchers call for more support to advance careers - November 2022

The Star newspaper sat down with our newly graduated Mawazo Alumna Evaline Sang' and our CEO Dr. Fiona Moejes to discuss the needs of African women researchers and how Mawazo is addressing them. The article highlights the gender disparity in academia as well as celebrates the strides that Mawazo has made to address them and bring them together for Mawazo's inaugural Mawazo Connects event. 

 

 

Tête-à-tête: Conversations about science engagement around the world - October 2022

The Falling Walls Engage Hub Canada presents a new virtual series where you will hear directly from leading “science engagers” from every corner of the planet. The first Tête-à-tête exchange featured Kari Mugo, Hub Manager of Falling Walls Engage Hub Kenya and Public Engagement Lead at Mawazo Institute and Silvia Mwendia, Public Engagement and Policy Programme Associate at Mawazo who shared what it means to be a science engagement practitioner in East Africa today. International Year of Science Engagement: Celebrating Women’s Herstory Month - Women and Girls in Science Engagement - March 2022
