On Wednesday the 13th of March 2024, The Nation ran a feature news piece on 2018 Mawazo Fellow, Dr. Marilyn Ronoh and her brainchild Beshte, the HIV & AIDS chatbot.
The feature highlighted the need behind the innovation by Dr.Marilyn and her team at the University of Embu, while also outlining the various ways in which Beshte can contribute to increasing HIV & AIDS testing among the youth in Kenya.
In this feature readers were also able to learn how Beshte works in the Kenyan landscape in regards to language and useability.

The panel discussion centered on the theme of “Count her in: Invest in women. Accelerate progress.” while recognising women researchers and the role that professional career women have in the development and innovation space in Kenya.

As a run-up to the International Women’s Day, 2024, the piece centers the IWD theme of the year “Count her in: Invest in women. Accelerate progress.” The Op-ed highlighted the gaps in representation of African women in various sectors and the numerous ways that women are left behind in provision of opportunities in the African continent.
THE CITIZEN: Tanzania needs to increase support for autistic learners in schools - March 2024
On Friday the 1st of March 2024, The Citizen Tanzania ran an opinion piece by, 2023 Mawazo Fellow, Miriam Loivotoki, on the need for the country to increase institutional and systemic academic support for learners on the spectrum.
Miriam Loivotoki, an education expert, accentuated the problems facing autistic learners in Tanzania such as the cost of private institutions suited to special needs learning and the lack of sufficient testing for learning disorders.

Dr. Peace Uwambaye, 2021 Mawazo Fellow and Senior Lecturer at University of Rwanda’s College of Medicine and Health Sciences, School of Dentistry, published an OpEd in Newspaper.Africa, a Rwandan online newspaper. Dr. Peace’s article, “Oral Health affects overall health, and should not take a backseat,” calls attention to Africa’s worrying state of oral healthcare and stresses the importance of research as a means to plan and conduct methods of intervention."

Dr. Thérèse Umuhoza, 2021 Mawazo Fellow and current Associate Director at Global Public Health and Development, Africa at Holden Fitzgerald published an OpEd in the Rwandan online newspaper Newspaper.Africa on “Why Governments must chart [a] course on tackling emerging disease threats”. The article centers Dr. Thérèse’s expertise as an epidemiologist as she forecasts African governments response to future epidemics.
KTN News: Eradicating HIV & AIDS - December 2023
Mawazo Alumni Dr.Marilyn Ronoh was interviewed by KTN News at 10 am as an expert panelist on HIV & AIDS testing among the youth. The panel also consisted of a youth representative who had tested Dr. Marilyn’s HIV chatbot. The segment focused on the means of increasing HIV & AIDS testing among the youth and the funding of youth friendly initiatives for HIV & AIDS in Kenya. The conversation was able to bring out the gaps that “Beshte”, the chatbot, would fill in this unique space and the need for support in such endeavors by government agencies.
KTN News: News Centre - November 2023
Mawazo Alumni Dr. Marilyn Ronoh and Dr. Victoria Mukami were interviewed on KTN News at 10 am about their HIV Chatbot. There are many affected by HIV & AIDS, and their brainchild looks to ease the burden by making information on the disease, preventative measures and solutions more available to anyone with an internet connection. Their project aims at developing a multi-lingual chatbot and will seek to reduce new HIV infections among adolescents and young adults.
TV 47: Food Security in Kenya - October 2023
Judy Ngina, 2021 Mawazo Fellow, appeared on a panel discussion on food security in Kenya hosted on the Morning Café by TV47. Discussions highlighted the dire situation on food security in the country especially in the ASAL regions with panelists giving possible solutions to the issues facing food production with Judy highlighting the impacts of agriculture on climate change and possible solutions to mitigate negative climate change i.e carbon emission.

Kavengi highlighted the various challenges and external pressures faced by a PhD student and the various coping mechanisms she found that assisted her throughout her journey. The uplifting and encouraging article is a must read for the struggling PhD student and offers insight on how to approach one’s PhD journey in a holistic and self-fulfilling manner.

The Mawazo Institute partnered with the British High Commission to host an event centered on women in science for International Women's Day and Capital News covered the event. This year's theme was: 'DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality', and Mawazo spotlighted the work of some of our Alumni in this field. TV47: Curbing Gender Based Violence - December 2022
On Saturday December 10th, Kenyan media channel TV47 featured an interview with Mawazo Institute Alumna Judy Ngina during their 9 O'clock news segment. December 10th marked the International Human Rights Day as well as the end of the16 days global campaign to end violence against women and girls. Judy spoke as an experienced Refugee Protection Officer at Dadaab Camp, where she worked for four years. She challenged governmental and non governmental agencies to take meaningful actions to meet Kenya's goal of ending GBV by 2026, stating that "we need more than mere words."

Mawazo Institute was the lead organizer for the 2018 edition of Africa Science Week - Kenya (ASW-K), alongside partners the Next Einstein Forum, J&J Innovation, the Fondation L’Oréal, and others. ASW-K kicked off with a launch event held on December 3rd, 2018. The event introduced scientists from the nationwide 'Faces of Kenyan Science’ campaign, previewed ASW-Kenya events, and featured showcases by young innovators including the Young Scientists Kenya and Little Einsteins. Key note speakers for the event were Dr. Rose M. Mutiso (CEO, Mawazo Institute), Ms. Nathalie Munyampenda (Managing Director, Next Einstein Forum), Ms. Alexandra Palt (Executive Vice President, Fondation L’Oréal) and Dr. Moses Rugutt (Director General, National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation). "A new journal to showcase Africa’s often-overlooked scientific research has been launched to give the continent’s scientists better global recognition.
Scientific African will be the first “mega-journal” in Africa. It was unveiled in Kigali last week at Africa’s biggest science conference, the Next Einstein Forum (NEF) conference, and the first issue is scheduled to be published at the end of the summer."

Or is it after that, in university, in family constraints or in the job market where there is a lot of discrimination against women? I think there are challenges across the whole pipeline but broad data would help us to understand where."
