Celebrating 5 Years of Investing in African Scientists - 10 February 2022

On this milestone occasion marking five years of the Mawazo Institute, I am reflecting on the theme of our celebration, The Female Future of Science. This theme encapsulates what we are working towards: a future in which women, science, and research are all integral to Africa's development.

 

 

Climate Week - 21 March 2022

Our response to the climate crisis requires new approaches and ways of thinking. This week at Mawazo, we're delving into the concept of 'Planetary Health' through a series of in-person and virtual activities. What is Planetary Health? Planetary health is a solutions-oriented, transdisciplinary approach and social movement that examines and addresses the effects of human disruptions to Earth's natural systems, on human health, and all life on Earth.

 

 

Women Scientists Breaking Barriers - 29 March 2022

Women's History Month, celebrated alongside International Women's Day, offers an opportunity to celebrate and promote girls and women's contributions to science. As a women-led organisation, our work is informed by the need to increase women's representation within the sciences and in positions of leadership. We believe that new ideas are needed to tackle Africa's development challenges - and that women's voices are critical in this.

It is a pleasure to announce Dr. Fiona Wanjiku Moejes as our new CEO. Dr Fiona has been serving as the acting CEO and Director of Programmes at the Mawazo Institute for the past year having accomplished great milestones in leading the development and roll out of ambitious strategies to accelerate the institution's core mandate.

 

 

A Change at the Top Kim Potvin Takes Over as Mawazo Board Chair - 12 September 2022

It is with great excitement that we announce Kim Potvin's appointment as Board Chair of the Mawazo Institute. This announcement comes as we celebrate five years since the Mawazo Institute was founded by Dr. Rose M. Mutiso and Rachel Strohm. In our first five years, the institution has experienced tremendous growth - and change.

 

 

Together: On the Road to Achieve Gender Equality in Research - 18 October 2022

On 8th September, the Mawazo Institute through its Nairobi Ideas Exchange organised a Webinar titled “Bridging the gender gap for women in research” in partnership with AuthorAID, a free pioneering global network that provides support for researchers in low- and middle-income countries.

 

 

Celebrating Curiosity and Innovation - 14 November 2022

There was so much inspiration and energy in the air as the first cohort of 40 African women PhD researchers were awarded with certificates of achievement on November 2nd, 2022, after completing the 15-month Mawazo Learning Exchange (MLEx) Programme at the Sarova Panafric Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya.

 

 

It's a Wrap! - 19 December 2022

We can’t quite believe that 2022 is coming to an end! And what a year it has been. It has been a year that saw our co-founder Rachel Strohm step down from her role as the board chair, paving the way for the organisation to step into its next phase of maturation and growth. It is the year that we completed and began implementing our new strategic plan, including the expansion of Team Mawazo to a team of 16 full-time members to support the realisation of our vision.
